The IRS has issued warnings about a phishing scam involving payroll and human resource departments. The scam encompasses school districts and nonprofit entities as well as other employers.
The scam includes emails requesting sensitive employee information such as social security numbers (SSN), and even copies of Forms W-2. Additionally, now the fraudsters are sending a follow up email requesting wire transfers.
Always be wary when you receive an email requesting any sensitive data, especially if you are in a position dealing with SSN or other private data for employees. Companies should have policies in place about the handling of employee W-2 formss and other sensitive data.
